Sunday Morning Musings, April 22

I hope to make this a weekly thing, jotting down what's close to me, and amusing, Sunday mornings before church and breakfast. Here's what I got this week ...

... My Philadelphia Flyers took a 3-0 NHL playoff series lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins and not once did I get comfortable. Pittsburgh's that good. They embarrassed Philly in Game 4, played what finally looked like an NHL playoff game and won Game 5, and now go to Philly for Game 6 which almost feels like a clincher to me. I never expected the Flyers to win this series, let alone make much postseason noise, but the thought of blowing a 3-0 lead, and having Pittsburgh fans remind me of it for the next 429 years, already makes my breaths short and the puck won't drop for another 2 hours ...

... The Orlando Magic will play in this year's NBA playoffs, but Magic fans should want the offseason to come as soon as possible, because this season hasn't been about basketball (quick, name Orlando's 2nd leading scorer!) My guess is that Stan Van Gundy will be gone -- because he's had enough, wants out and NBA coaches are a dime a dozen -- and Dwight Howard will return next year because he wants to stay, and with the back injury you can't trade him and hope to get anywhere near fair value. I think the next logical scenario is that the big Magic trio -- Van Gundy, Howard and GM Otis Smith -- will all be gone. If 2 leave, they all leave.

Oh, and I guessed right before I looked it up. It's Ryan Anderson ...

... I see that ESPN has already started listing their playoff percentages on the baseball standings. Never mind there's still about 145 games to play. That's an awful lot of faith in the work of some computers. The Philllies, for instance, led the NL East with a 62.2% probability of making the playoffs despite a 7-8 record and being 4.5 games behind the 11-4 Washington Nationals -- who carry a 44.6% chance, third in the division. At least it gives credence to the theory that all things are possible, just not probable ...

... The Boston Red Sox. Um, oops. Looks like karma bit them in the butt. A day after Sawks fans had a chance to be classy during their Fenway Park 100th anniversary festivites Friday -- but instead broke out in a rythmic chant of "Yankees Suck" -- Bahstin blew a 9-0 5th inning lead and lost 15-9 on Saturday. Of course Yankees fans took the opportunity to kick their little brother when he was down and lock him in the closet. The Red Sox need to worry about their littany of problems instead of hating New York, and the Yankees need to move on and keep winning. And outlets like ESPN need to stop perpetuating that the Yanks and Sox want to kill each other (and also stop reminding us that Eagles fans booed Santa Claus forty-two years ago) for ratings purposes ...

... Many of you know I fancy myself the casino game hound. I can deal poker, blackjack and craps games with a top-notch feel. If you want to learn the same, I found some great online resources ...

Blackjack: From the mind and talents of Heather from vegas-aces.com: You can find a great tutorial on learning to deal (and getting a house job doing so) on Youtube. Part 1 is here, and you can find the ensuing parts in the related videos on the right. The videos are also accessible on her website.

Poker: Dealer/floorman/supervisor/manager Matt Shumsker goes over all sorts of poker dealing procedures at True Poker Dealer. He even teaches how to shuffle properly; turns out I've been doing it improperly. So I started doing it the way he shows. I think I dislocated a knuckle.

Parting shot: I swore of Taco Bell for about a year. Then there I was Saturday in the drive-thru pulled in by the prospect of the Doritos Loco Taco and it's shell made out of a Doritos chip-type substance. It gets the Jaxen thumbs-up, despite the "meat" not really being 100% meat.

Catch me Thursday, when I have Randy O'Neal, head coach of the 25-0 Olympia High School baseball team, on my weekly show, The Community Sports Report, on WPRK 91.5 FM, and accessible here online.
